Bruges: Lybeer Travellers’ Hostel

February 6, 2010

We spent our two nights in Bruges at the Lybeer Travellers’ Hostel and all-in-all, we were very happy. The proximity to both the train station and the city is great and there are restaurants, cafes, loads of shops and the gothic Sint-Salvators Cathedral just around the corner. Bruges is pretty small, but definitely worth a visit. It’s a lovely, walkable city with lots to see, eat, drink and experience. Neither of us had been to Bruges before, so having the friendly guys at the hostel provide helpful tips, suggestions and nightly entertainment was definitely a plus. The first night we were there, there was a Belgian beer tasting for €7.50 and the next night there was a free tour of Bruges (tips heartily appreciated, I’m assuming). Breakfast, wifi/internet (2 computers), linen and towels are included free of charge and next to the large living area/chill out room is a movie room where you can watch movies for free as well. The bar is open all day and beer is inexpensively priced from €1.70. We had a private double room with ensuite on the first floor and, although not modern, it was clean, reasonably sized and comfortable. No idea about breakfast as we slept in both days, but there’s a well equipped kitchen if you want to cook something yourself. The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable, neither rowdy nor boring. If you’re there on a Saturday, make sure to check out the market around the corner at ‘t Zand square (next to the bus stop): seriously yum!

Loved:

  • The location.
  • The friendly and helpful staff.
  • The relaxed atmosphere in the living area/chill out space.
  • The cheap beer
  • The ‘inclusives’: breakfast, linen, towels, wifi (only downstairs though)
  • That there’s a laundry room on site

We didn’t love:

  • The stairs. Our room was somewhere between the first and second floor and the narrow hallways and the steep spiralling staircase were not a welcome sight for us and our mountain of luggage.
  • It would’ve been nice to have wifi in the rooms.
  • The bathroom could have used some loving (updating). Also, the water was warm, but never made it to hot.

Verdict:
To be honest, I feel a bit silly adding things that we ‘disliked’. It honestly feels a bit like nitpicking. Sure we wouldn’t have minded if the wifi worked upstairs as well, but was it really an issue here? Nope… and besides using it to get the bags up when we arrived and down when we left, we would probably use the stairs over an elevator anyway. As long as certain boxes are ticked (for us that would include safety/security, convenience, comfort, cleanliness and location), the experience can go either way depending on the remaining factors, such as the staff, the other guests, the atmosphere, the little extras and so on. At Lybeer Travellers’ Hostel, those boxes were ticked and the extras they provided left us happy and satisfied customers.

Transport the Bruges train station is about a 15 – 20 minute walk away.

And? I recommend it.
