Berlin: Room 77 and the “Best F*%king Burgers in Town”

October 11, 2009

Having just arrived into Berlin that morning, we decided to keep it realistic and simply aim to check out one of the two apartments we had found online. I had been hunting down apartments to rent/sublet for two weeks and let me tell you, it’s no fun (see my post on subletting/renting apartments for more info). In the end, we arrived with just two prospects; both one bedroom, fully furnished apartments in Kreuzberg. The owner of the apartment was a lovely Mexican guy who, like me, is passionate about food. He suggested a few places to try out in the area and, as my friend was hankering badly for a burger, we decided to try out a little place called Room 77.

From the outside it doesn’t look like much and quite honestly, had it not been recommended, it wouldn’t have occurred to us to eat there. As we neared the front door we were greeted by a sign declaring that they have ‘the best fucking burgers in town’. Quite a claim. The place has a kind of shabby-cool look going on with long lounge-enticing tables and couches distributed across the front section of the bar and a few tables down the back as well. It’s a bit like your crazy Aunt Mildred’s living room (with a bar thrown in). The music, like the outfitting, is quirky and tends towards older stuff.

The one bartender on duty was a lovely Australian from Melbourne who laughed when I asked her how hard it is to get a job in Berlin. Ironically, it’s no laughing matter, but I suppose a morbid laugh would probably have been my answer as well. It was a Sunday evening and yet there were enough people there that we needed to sit at the bar to eat. Didn’t matter though; we were both hungry and thirsty, so we figured proximity to source was a good thing!

We ordered one of their famous burgers (was a spicy one – can’t remember the name) and the ‘Room 77 nachos’. They took a good long time to find their way to us, but as they say in their menu, “our beer is warm, our women are cold and our food is slow”. That burger, though… it was worth the wait! The nachos were rather average, but the burger more than made up for it. It tasted like a burger ought to taste; it was big, juicy and oozing with simple, but hearty flavours. The drinks were equally generous. Am I complaining? Hell no!

There are 15 or so different burgers to choose from with American-diner-style names like ‘the road kill burger’ and ‘double bypass cheese burger’. Other items on the menu include nachos, burritos, salads, pizzas, quesadillas; and if at the end you’re still feeling like you could use a little somethin’… fried mars bars awaits.

Verdict: It’s a great, relaxed place to hang out, have a few drinks and a bite to eat. Do they have, as they claim, the best burgers in town? Well, I’ve been in Berlin for less than a day, so I can’t say… but in between checking out the competition (for research purposes, of course), I’ll definitely be back.
